David Parsons

On May 30, 2012, during their regularly scheduled Arctic Synod meetings, delegates were called upon to vote for their next diocesan and suffragan (assistant) bishops. Following much prayer and discernment, the Reverend Captain David Parsons was elected as diocesan bishop.

Parsons, following in the apostolic line, will be consecrated on Sunday, June 3, 2012 in Iqualit NU where the meetings are taking place. The celebration will also make the opening of the ‘igloo’ Cathedral, which has been under construction.

Parsons was commissioned in 1989 as an Evangelist with Threshold Ministries (then Church Army). Following his commissioning, he ministered in the north, followed by a number of years in New Brunswick with the Seafarer’s Mission and as Atlantic Missioner. In 2001, he and his wife Rita, returned to the North to serve as Priest-in-Charge of Inuvik NT.

“David has an incredible passion for people, and for people to know the Lord. He has been an incredible leader in the north and as diocesan bishop, I have no doubt that he will lead the people with great humility and courage.” commented Shawn Branch, National Director Elect for Threshold Ministries. “This is a great calling and I look forward to working with and supporting David in his ministry.”

Let us remember David and Rita in prayer as they prepare for this new ministry, and the people of the Arctic whom David will shepherd.

Almighty God, send down your Holy Spirit upon your servant David, who will be consecrated in your name to the office and work of a bishop in the Church. Amen.

UPDATE: The Reverend Darren McCartney was elected as Suffragan (assistant) Bishop. McCartney has been serving in the Diocese of Dromore, Church of Ireland.
